The origins of the event: between history and legend
Previous editions of Federicus have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over Europe, and this year promises to be even more extraordinary. Altamura is confirmed as the ideal destination for lovers of history, culture and adventure. Every corner of the city exudes history and tradition, making the Federicus experience even more authentic and fascinating.
Federicus - Medieval Festival was born from the desire to enhance the territory of the city of Altamura, the most populous center of the Alta Murgia. Legend has it that Frederick II, on his way through the city and on his way to Bari to sail to the Holy Land, left soldiers here sick with malaria who were healed thanks to the salubrious air of the place. To celebrate the miraculous healing, the Swabian emperor had the Cathedral built, the seat of secular and ecclesiastical power in the medieval city.
In fact, the emperor wanted to have a church erected to gain the benevolence of Pope Gregory IX, who had previously excommunicated him, in a city with a strategic location toward Bari and within his beloved Apulia.

Events and attractions
During the three-day festival, there will be numerous attractions and events to entertain visitors of all ages. From historical re-enactments to medieval markets, costume parades to displays of ancient arts and crafts, there is something for everyone. Visitors can also enjoy culinary delights inspired by medieval cuisine at taverns and banquets set up for the occasion.
Federicus is not only a show to watch, but also an opportunity to become an active part of history. Visitors will be invited to participate in medieval games, interactive theater performances and workshops devoted to ancient crafts.
