Where to look at the stars on the night of San Lorenzo in Puglia

It is one of the most eagerly awaited nights of summer, spent with one's nose up 'scanning the sky. Every once in a while, with a glance or a stroke of luck, someone enthusiastically points to a corner of the celestial vault and places their deepest wishes in the bright wake of a star. It is the night of August 10, better known as the night of St. Lawrence. According to an ancient tradition, anyone who observes a shooting star can make a wish and entrust it to its course, which will make it come true, provided, however, that they guard it in silence.

The reason why these luminous trails, also known as tears of St. Lawrence, appear in the Earth's sky in the very middle of August is because the Earth passes through the Perseid swarm at this time. Since it is a midsummer night, it is ideal for stargazing.

The must-have condition for not missing the shooting star show is to be in a dark place, away from the lights of built-up areas and all sorts of light pollution. Perhaps at the beach, while the sea in the background sings its roaring melody and a gentle breeze rises to refresh your thoughts.

Let's find out together what are the best places and the most enchanting beaches where to spend the night of St. Lawrence, looking for the stars.

Experience the night of San Lorenzo in Salento

Salento is among the most popular destinations for this occasion. On the most beautiful stretches of the Salento coastline, whether it faces the clear waters of the Adriatic or the Ionian, there are enchanting beaches and stretches of coastline ideal where you can bring a camping tent, or even just a towel, spending the night scanning the sky in anticipation of seeing shooting stars.

At the southernmost point of the region is Santa Maria di Leuca. Named De Finibus Terrae and considered by the ancients to be the point at which the world ended, today it is among the most striking seaside resorts in Puglia. A walk with one's nose to the sky, along the seafront or in the historic center, at the foot of the great lighthouse that stands solitary and majestic, is undoubtedly able to restore with its beauty the desire to return to dreaming and to give at least a chance to the most recondite desires.

Alternatively, from Santa Maria di Leuca one can go up along the Adriatic coastline encountering mostly rocky stretches of coastline. However, even here there is no shortage of strategic points from which to admire the stars. The locality par excellence of this short coastal segment that changes face at the height of Otranto is certainly Castro Marina. It stretches from its Porto Vecchio to the great wall that acts as a barrier to the motion of the sea and counteracts its motion.

It is the best place for those in search of quiet and silence in which to rest their thoughts and concentrate on the strength of their desires. The special feature of this place are the large cubic blocks arranged close to the breakwaters, which on occasion each become a small island for couples or small groups who decide to make it their landing place for a night.

If, on the other hand, one is more oriented towards a location on the beach, chasing the wave of fun and the wildest nightlife, from Castro one can continue along the Adriatic coast towards Otranto and the marinas of Melendugno.

Once in Otranto, one can opt for the small beach laid out just a stone's throw from the historic center, also taking advantage of the opportunity to take a stroll through the heart of the city.

Very striking and at times romantic, is the view that opens at night from the top of the ramparts. In the distance, the boundary between the sky and the sea is lost in darkness, and the dim light of the stars mingles with the small lights of the boats moored on the pier. Yet all this is enough to rekindle hopes and desires to whisper to fate and the constellations.

Another among the options to consider, favored especially by a youth target, is to move to the Alimini Lakes resort, also near Otranto. Being an area far from the urban center, the brightness is low and allows for an exceptional view of the stars. It is usual to light bonfires on the beach and warm up the atmosphere on the notes of guitars and percussion instruments there and then, even improvised.

Precisely by virtue of being one of the privileged destinations where to spend the night of San Lorenzo and see shooting stars, along the extended beach of Alimini there are many bars and clubs that stay open until the morning with music and dance floor where to get wild.

Just under twenty kilometers from Otranto is the first of the marinas that embrace the Melendugno area: Torre SantAndrea, an ancient fishing village. Moving gradually further on, one reaches the other localities, including Torre dellOrso, Roca Vecchia and San Foca.

The beaches and locations of the Adriatic coast are among the favorites because from this side of Salento it is possible to witness the exciting spectacle of dawn, when the shy sun peeps allorizzonte and is admired by the still sleepy eyes.

However, there is no shortage of strategic spots and optimal beaches for scanning the sky on the Ionian side of Salento as well. An example of this is the renowned marina of Ugento, with its soft white beach on which to lie down and wait for the right opportunity to express the deepest of desires; or the marina of Nardò, in the silence and quiet of a location like Santa Maria al Bagnowhere the melody of the sea lulls your thoughts.

That said, it is important to point out that lighting bonfires on the beach is an illegal act for various and just reasons. So it is necessary to equip yourself in respect of the environment and everyone, perhaps do not set the bonfire directly on the sand but in a special tin container. And make sure in the morning to put it out properly and not to leave the container with coals on the sand.

Last but not least, remember to never leave trash on the beach and always respect the sea and nature.
