Discovering the lagoon of Porto Cesareo
Here are the milestones of the tour to discover the Porto Cesareo lagoon and its wonders.
The island of rabbits
The island can be reached simply: it is located about 1 km from the coast and is included in the Protected Marine Area of Porto Cesareo. Here there is a particularly lush flora, consisting mostly of plants typical of the Mediterranean maquis. Itsseabed is rich in fauna and is easy for those who intend to explore it by snorkeling.Isola dei Conigli, also known as Isola Grande, acquired its particular name between the '40s and the '50s when a special initiative was promoted, concerning the breeding of a colony of animals in the wild that were made to proliferate right on the island to cope with possible famines.
Today the rabbits have been almost removed from the island, which looks like a small natural paradise with a small beach overlooking the transparent sea.

The witch
Another little piece of paradise worth exploring by boat from Porto Cesareo is the peninsula of La Strea. The location stretches along the southern coastline.
Here a thick, low Mediterranean scrub welcomes with its thousands of shades of green: myrtle, sea lilies, large purple flowers of thyme, cysts, lentisk and meadows of maritime scilla.
The coast of Strea is almost entirely rocky: with the right equipment, on the tip of the peninsula, it is possible to swim by engaging in snorkeling and diving to explore the beautiful seabed. Here you can easily admire the pinna nobilis, the largest mollusk in the Mediterranean.
The Island of Mallow
A really small but pristine and virgin islet, a sandy tongue that looks desert-like on the surface. In reality on the Island of Mallow, there is a large amount of tree mallow that gives this small tongue of land its name.
Otherwise, the island's vegetation is sparse. Its cliffs are dry and gray in color, almost at the water's edge, in symbiotic fusion with the sea to which it gives small irregularities of rare beauty.
The beaches of Torre Chianca and Punta Prosciutto
For those who love long and spacious beaches of golden sand, moving north from Porto Cesareo, you cannot miss the small Punta Prosciutto. It's one of those places where the morning light makes everything shine and the heart is instantly comforted. Taking a swim in such clear waters is truly rejuvenating.Punta Prosciutto stretches from Torre Colimena to Torre Lapillo and is circumscribed and protected by a thick Mediterranean scrub that, just in this area can boast particular specimens of flora and fauna to the point of having made necessary the establishment of aprotectedareacalled Parco Naturale Regionale Palude del Conte.
The area in front of the majestic Torre Chianca, south of Porto Cesareo, is also reflected in the shallow and sandy seabed: its beach is about 450 meters long and consists mainly of soft and fine sand, lapped by a crystal-clear sea.

Coasting Torre Chianca by boat, it is ideal to still snorkel in the shallow, sandy seabed that makes this activity exhilarating yet easy and safe.
Torre Chianca can certainly be counted among the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Salento, thanks to the striking scenery that surrounds it: among its sand dunes, there is a lush Mediterranean scrub consisting of reeds, daffodils and other typical plants.
