The most beautiful sets of films shot in Apulia

There are places that enter the collective imagination thanks to the silver screen. Chosen for the emotions they manage to convey even at a fleeting glance, they remain forever imprinted in the mind.

Apulia, with its varied territory and unique views, is one of the regions of Italy that boasts more appearances in national and international film and television sets.

The evocative beauty of so many corners of Puglia has been the choice of renowned filmmakers for decades now.

Follow our tour from the north to the south of the region to find out which are the favorite destinations of Italian and international cinema . Visiting the places that have been sets of films shot in Puglia means observing these small worlds from a different perspective and taking an unprecedented journey:

Polignano a Mare and the Land of Bari

The Land of Bari is the place of Checco Zalone's heart and origin. The Apulian comedian who hits the box office with his hilarious films could only choose his land to set most of the scenes of his films.

"Cado dalle nubi" has as its backdrop Polignano a Mare, one of the iconic locations on the Apulian coast that was, among other things, the birthplace of Domenico Modugno. Here the sheer views of the turquoise sea dominate and the white alleys of the old town center are visited every year by thousands of tourists from all over the world.

In "Quo vado?" Checco Zalone moves instead to Conversano, the beautiful town with a medieval flavor surrounded by the countryside and karst plateaus. Its historic center is encircled by the town's ancient walls. From here there is a wonderful panoramic view. A must-see is the Acquaviva Castle, the Picture Gallery and the imposing Cathedral Basilica.

The province of Bari was also the choice of the award-winning Matteo Garrone, who set his "Pinocchio" in Noicattaro in the world's smallest Italian-style theater. This little jewel of art and culture was recently restored and can now be visited in all its glory.

Matteo Garrone also placed the House of the Blue Fairy in Monopoli, a village with an unquestionable seafaring flavor. The most emblematic place in the town is certainly the harbor with the characteristic vozz, gozzi: typical local wooden boats with the characteristic light blue and red colors.

Gallipoli and the Salento

Going southward and reaching the Salento, there are many places that Italian and foreign filmmakers have immortalized in their works. First among them is Ferzan Ozpetek, who chose Gallipoli, Lecce, Maglie and Castro for his masterpiece "Mine Vaganti."

There are many emblematic images that the Turkish-Italian director has given us of this land: from the characteristic streets of Lecce's historic center to the most beautiful sea views of Punta della Suina and nearby Gallipoli.

Gallipoli is also the destination of the southward journey of Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, who set here some of the most hilarious scenes of the 1990s cult film "Three Men and a Leg."

Taranto and the Murge

"The Gospel According to Matthew," a masterpiece by Pier Paolo Pasolini, is set right between Ginosa, Massafra, Manduria, Castel del Monte, Santeramo and Gioia del Colle.

Landscapes poised between land and sea that at that time returned all their wild charm and constituted a perfect alternative setting to the Palestine...

Among the internationally renowned films shot in Puglia, we can also name No time to die 25th film in the James Bond saga, filmed in the enchanting Gravina in Puglia. The peculiarity of this village perched on the rock, lies in its gravine precisely, deep erosive gorges carved by water into the limestone rock like real canyons, which make its territory unique landscape.

Taranto, on the other hand, was the protagonist in the film Six Underground by renowned director Michael Bay . The cradle of Magna Graecia has its heart in the characteristic Old Town connected to the mainland by two bridges. Here stands majestically the Aragonese Castle, one of the undisputed symbols of Taranto.
